On the Gulf Film Festival 2009, part 1 of ??

Apr 22 2009 Published by Moos under Events, film

A humble opening ceremony it was I’d say, very much to the point and no bullshit. Since the first day everyone knew that the film “Mesopotamia” was very much the competitor for the best short film in the competition. It’s a Danish production, acted in Iraqi, and directed by Fenar Ahmed, a Danish-Iraqi filmmaker. The film is set in Iraq in 2020, a very pessimistic look at the future of Iraq that was beautifully shot. The film eventually did win the 1st place in the short film competition.

I’ll talk about the short film competition, then move to other sections in the festival.

Aside from “Mesopotamia” the competition this year was really strange, unlike the past few years. You couldn’t guess who was going to win or not… which is a good thing actually… most filmmakers knew which films were not going to win, but not the other way around.

In the official competition there was only one Omani film,” Raheel” by Jasim Al-Batashi. I think that Jasim, by watching his last 3 films, didn’t get rid of his theatrical influence in film. You can see that in many aspects of his films, though I think that this one was his best yet. I really can’t stand the over use of the poetic narration, which takes away some of the visual qualities of the whole experience of that short film. It’s enough to make us see it, why tell it again and again and explain it. I think Jasim would make way way better films in the upcoming years.

As for Iraq, aside from “Mesopotamia,” there were 3 films in competition, that between the poor quality and the directness of their messages got lost in the process of their own making. Last year’s Iraqi films were really better.

Saudia Arabia was there, I mean right THERE!! in your face! I’d say that this year the Saudis were in competition as 2 teams, Talashi and other Saudis.

Talashi is a group from Riyadh. Those people shocked the audiences with their wit and frustration. By having 5 films in competition and 2 in the lights section, Talashi blew our minds with their films. We laughed, almost cried, laughed and felt the frustration of those filmmakers and what goes on in their lives there in Saudi. The rebels I’d call them, In “Three Men and a Woman” by Abdelmohsen Al-Dhabba’an, we see 2 screenwriters auditioning an actor to star in their next film, and end up assigning him to also play all the women roles too, because they have no female actresses, we even see him acting as his own wife in bed, while… yes! while making love!

A still from "Three men and a woman"

Anothere Talashi film I’d like to talk about is “According to Local Time” by Mohammed Al-Khalaif, in which we see a hungry guy wanting to eat but everywhere he goes is either for families only or closed for prayer. At the end when the film fades to black the guy talks to the director telling him “Why are you ending now? I want to eat before you end this” and the director replies “We’re closing for Prayer!”

Talashi got a special mention certificate by the jury. An hounour really, which they very much deserve.

Fahad Al-Esta recieving Talashi's certificate

Fahad Al-Esta recieving Talashi's certificate, I have no idea what was Hussain Al-Mansour doing at the Festival! *more coming later* ;-)

The dark horse of this competition I’d say was “Sunrise/Sunset” by Mohammed Al-Dhaheri, also from Talashi, which won the 3rd place in the competition. It’s a day in life of a street kid, from home to school to work in the street to getting raped to being cought by the religous police.

To talk about the things that no one wants to talk about was what distinguished most of the Saudi films. Telling true stories and talking about serious problems without being “educational” as other films did, they know how to talk about a certain ordeal without looking like a Khaleeji soap opera. I think that we’ll see more coming from Saudi, their cinema promises a lot and I wish them all the luck and success.

I’ll talk more about the festival in the next post, more about the Bahraini, Emarati and maybe the Kuwaiti films ; – )

Apr 07 2009 Published by Moos under Events, film

The Gulf Film Festival (GFF) is being held in Dubai, Festival City from April 9th till 15th, 2009.

Amongst 40 short films in Competition there are 9 short films from Kuwait, and 5 short films amongst 31 that are out of competition (Lights section.)

What I really like about the Kuwaiti participation this year is the diversity of the films, which includes drama, comedy, action, animation, experimental, war and documentary.

The films in Competition are:

1) The Sniper (القناص) directed by Dawood Shuail

2) Hosha (هوشة) directed by Faisal Al-Duwaisan

5) Wa Waila (Oh, Torment) (واويلاه) directed by Monira Al-Qadiri

Amer Al-Zuhair, last year’s best documentry winner, is also in competition this year for best documentry for his “When The People Spoke, part 3″ (عندما تكلم الشعب: الجزء الثالث)

“The Circle” (الدائرة) is a feature film that’s co-produced between UAE and Kuwait. It’ll be screened out of competition. It is directed by Nawaf Al-Janahi and produced by Abdullah Boushahri (Beyond Dreams Productions)

It’s an honour to be involved in the production of 5 out of the 9 short films in competition; Mama produced by “MIQ&MOOS” and also The Sniper, Hosha, Naked Human, and Banana which are films by Aks Group (مجموعة عكس), which I’ll write about more in the future…

I wish all my friends the best this year, since I didn’t shoot my film. Because if I shot my film, I’d wish the luck just  for myself  ; – )

I’m leaving to Dubai tomorrow morning, and will be back on the 16th. Hopefully there will be a big crowded screening for those Kuwaiti films once we get back here. We need all the support that we can get.

Below are the official facebook groups for some of the films, join for updates, followed by trailers of Hosha and Banana. If you also visit Faradess you’ll read more about some of the Kuwaiti films and a small article on Aks Group.

Faradees

Apr 07 2009 Published by Moos under Events, film, out with friends

Faradees is an online Arabic  journal that’s concerned with cinema in the gulf, it was established by my dear friend Mohammed Hassan Ahmed, an Emarati poet, writer and screenwriter AND a photographer. An award winning screenwriter, whose films won several awards from festival from Japan to USA, passing Europe on the way. Mohammed was in Kuwait for one week to attend the Gulf Theatre Festival held here and left 2 days ago. We had the chance to hang out with fellow filmmakers and Mohammed for several nights and talk about a range of subjects…  from women to the future of cinema in the gulf area… maybe only those 2 subjects!! and let’s not forget sheesha, which I had twice, but don’t think will consider as a habit ever again, but who knows…

Faradess, which is only run by Mohammed himself, is now the place for filmmakers from the gulf to catch up with latest news and send their own film updates to be published there. So a big thanx goes to Mohammed for his one-man-effort and his establishing this journal. Thanx for your support and inspiration my friend.

Jan 25 2009 Published by Moos under Events, YouTube, daily stuff, family, funny, music

I had to wake up early today, the 24th that is. I was among a small cast performing in a birthday party. The theme was The Wizard Of Oz. I was The Tin Man. I had the costume and a small plastic axe. So we arrive at this farm/chalet in Al Funaitees. WOW!! I couldn’t believe that someone would pay that much money for his 4 year old girl’s birthday. It was like a mini-tiny-myni Land of Oz!!! Let’s say it’s size was about 4 7okoma houses… not so mini-tiny-myni after all, huh?

Yes, there was a “yellow brick road” ya3ni the set was AMAZING!

Anyway, so we get into costumes… put our make-up on… stand in our positions in the Land Of Oz… The show didn’t start yet. Kids passing by, saying hi or running away scared. Mostly saying hi. but there were 2 kids that I’d love to tell you about.

First, David… I think he was British… I didn’t mention that the ages of the kids were between 2 and 4 did I? so David was about 4, so cute with short blonde hair. So he comes up to me and he says “Hi” I shake his tiny hand and say *very silly voice* “Hello Kid! What’s your name?”

D: David.

M: *silly voice all the way* Hello David, how are you doing?

D: I’m good, thank you.

M: David, do you know who am I?

D: *very excited* YES!!

M: *very excited too* Really?? who am I?

D: You’re the King!

M: *Big question mark on my face, and small ones on my ass* Nooo! I’m Tin Man.

D: Yes. You are the man.

David ran away to paint his face!!

This is the second one… after the show ended, Tin Man got a heart of course!!, each character went to his/her place so that kids can take photos with them. So…

Kids started walking down the yellow brick road, starting from Oz heading towards Dorothy’s house. So, I’m surrounded by kids and they are waiting in line to take photos with Mr. Tin Man.  So this girl comes out of nowhere and holds my hand, and starts taking photos with all the other kids. She’s about 4 maybe and she’s soooo cute, ya7lailha… there were too many women taking photos and I didn’t know which one is her mother… anyway, after about 1 minute she runs away… 5 minutes later she comes back with her mother… she runs towards me and I hear her mother saying “Lujain, wait mama. Shway shway. Be careful”

So she stands next to me, I’m kneeling of course, and she offers me her hand to hold. She starts taking pictures with her other friends ba3ad. Then just her. Then with friends. Then just her. Her mother says “Yallah Lujian nabi enroo7 mama, we’re leaving.” So before she runs back to her mother Lujain squeezes my baby finger, she leans and rests her head on my right shoulder and with all the innocence in the world looks me in the eye and say “I like you”

Ladies and Gentlemen. My heart is broken. Wallah she broke my heart. I said “Awwwww! I like you too ba3ad 7abeebti” then she gave me half a hug and went running to her mother.

So after Tin Man got a heart from the Wizard *in our mini version of course* Lujain comes and breaks Tin Man’s heart. Ya7lailha! Wallah 9ij 9ij 3awwart galbi! So cute!

Lujain made my day!

****

after the show we waited 50 mnts for our ride, to take us back to our cars.

went home, took a shower then went back to another rehearsal

****

Went back home, heading to my room… My little 9 year old sister comes running my way, and she gives me a huge hug!! with a big smile… you know what that means right?

So she’s like “wainik ma shifitk 9ar li cham yoom?” I said “wallah mash’3ool, kan 3endi brovat w masra7eyah” and then she’s like “3adi amaththil ma3ak?” I said “but we have no parts for little girls” and she’s like “enzain 3adi, mabi amaththil, bs abi a6leb minnik sha’3la, momkin?” and then I knew why all the hugging stuff 6la3at… she was like “tegdar teshtereeli telephone? Ommi etgool 3adi etha enta eshtaraytli!”

So yeah, we still didn’t finish that conversation cuz my mother interrupted us and they left to my aunt’s house…

****

Too many kids to deal with in 1 day! :p

1st stanza from Black Diamond Bay by Bob Dylan

Up on the white veranda
She wears a necktie and a Panama hat.
Her passport shows a face
From another time and place
She looks nothin’ like that.
And all the remnants of her recent past
Are scattered in the wild wind.
She walks across the marble floor
Where a voice from the gambling room is callin’ her to come on in.
She smiles, walks the other way
As the last ship sails and the moon fades away
From Black Diamond Bay.

The rest can be found here.

here’s the song

I just got back from Dubai 2 days ago… the festival was BIG!! what an organization!
There were about 12 screens playing different films in the same time!! It was really hard to decide which films to see… let alone the conferences and the workshops and parties… it was just big! and I’m really amazed…

The best film I’ve seen there was “Three Monkeys” directed by Nuri Bilge Ceylan. A truly masterpiece. I also liked “Salamandra” directed by Pablo Aguero who won the Jury Prize for best short film at the 2006 Cannes Film Festival, Salamandra was his first feature length film. I saw “Il Divo” by Paolo Sorrentino, this film was so HEAVY!! and full of dialogue and the acting was brilliant. Also saw “Return to Hansala” a spanish-morrocan production which was fine. The actress in it was there at the festival, her name is Farah Ahmed and she is so sexy… so I took a photo with her and nothing more… ok, I complimented her on her performance too much maybe… I also met Hany Abu-Assad the director of the plaestinian film “Paradise Now” and also took a photo ba3ad…

And one day when I was going to have lunch, I understood how 13 year old girls feel when they see The Jonasd Brothers or whatever… I saw Terry Gilliam!!!! I couldn’t believe my eyes!! I ran to him as he was leaving his table and said hi and asked him to take a photo with him, he said do it very quickly cuz his car was waiting for him outside… YES!!!! I took a photo with Terry Gilliam!! WOOOHHHOOOO!!! I told him I’m a big big fan and thank you for your time….

can you believe this? I met Terry Gilliam… I never believed in taking photos with famous people, but when you see some you rtethink that a9lan…

I also saw Brendan Fraser but he was in so much hurry that I thought it’s better not to go and talk to him… but who cares!! I got Terry Gilliam!!

I also missed a private party with Nicholas Cage, cuz I knew one of the organizers there and she offered to let us in… but I went and had a bad burger instead!

The weather there was great, the best time of year to visit Dubai really… not so cold not so warm but beautiful…

I’m very amazed by the festival and the whole organization… great great job people of DIFF.

In Dubai I wrote some stuff… I don’t know what to call them really… pieces maybe… I wrote them in Arabic, and I’ll post them in a few days… I’ll post them without editing them or anything cuz I want to them to be read the way they came to me… though I know some of them might be better edited but madr… I wanna post them as I wrote them…

This is “Storytime” by Terry Gilliam… one of his early animations… he did it in 1968

Enjoy!

Catching up… and down…

Yesterday was the last Othello performance, it went really well I think. We got lots of good reviews from people… of course no one will say it was bad! they’ll keep it to themselves, right? but things really went well, and we had people waiting on the gates for tickets for the last 2 days… it was overbooked, at least that was what I heard ;)

I didn’t go to the gym in 2 weeks. And been eating lots of fast food during the rehearsals… what would you eat if you have a 45 minutes break and there’s no decent restaurants next to the British embassy of course, so hello Souq Sharq food court!! I think I gained a lot of weight…. not that I’m worried, but I was really eating wayed wayed and not going to the gym, so you do the math… or you do the fat :p

I still have the last 30 pages of a book I’m reading and didn’t finish it yet, it’s been maybe 4 weeks wallah. I still have lots of projects coming up, 3 short films and an ad for TV… busy busy busy… I haven’t watched a film in a few weeks ba3ad, which is very critical in my case… I miss movie nights in my place, specially the ones that Hussain falls asleep during, it’s an indication that the film is really good… this rating system is better than any other ;)

My brother is getting better, and he’ll be out of the hospital hopefully next Thursday… I really miss him… and glad he’ll be out

I would like also to thank Reemi for organizing the films screening in KU this morning, and thanx to all our friends who came and I hope they enjoyed their time… of course they did!!

After that I went out to lunch with Nada, we had lots of things to talk about and I really had a great time… Thanx Nada, next time is on ME! :)

Ok, people you really gotta see this… I never thought that Steven Seagal can sing to save his life, whatever that means… but really? Steven Seagal? Singing? I’m really surprised… he’s actually not bad… actually good and better than lots of the shit that’s on MTV and the radio
